Internet2 Community Anchor Program (CAP)

The Internet2 Community Anchor Program (CAP) works with regional Research and Educational Networks across the U.S. to connect anchor institutions to high performance broadband services.  Community anchor institutions include colleges/universities, K-12 schools, public libraries, healthcare facilities, museums, and public service entities.

On September 1, 2007, LEARN: Lonestar Education and Research Network became the Internet2 Connector for Texas. As part of Internet2's K-20 Initiative, individual entities and state and regional networks in Texas that are not members of Internet2 may apply through LEARN or through a LEARN Member Aggregator who serves as a Sponsor for a connection to the Internet2 Network under Internet2's Community Anchor Program (CAP).

CAP provides educators, librarians, doctors, and other community leaders opportunities to utilize a powerful broadband network in ways that a local provider cannot.  Research, worldwide video connections, and telemedicine are just a few ways the CAP helps enrich a community.  For example:

  • Classrooms across the globe are able to connect via video conferencing and experience cultures and communities from afar

  • Through telemedicine, rural communities can access doctors with specialties rather than traveling a great distance for excellent health care

  • Higher education and health science centers are working on some of today’s most importantadvanced research and require access to ESnet for sharing of large data files.
